Following Jorginho’s transfer to Arsenal, the vice-captaincy position at Chelsea Football Club is currently empty.
The Italian midfielder joined the Gunners on the final day of the recently closed winter transfer window in a deal worth £12 million, Former Chelsea manager Frank Lampard appointed Jorginho as vice Captain for the first time in 2019-20 season. He held the position under Thomas Tuchel and Graham Potter until last month when he quit the club.
Graham Potter must now fill the leadership void left by the 31-year-departure olds from the club. In determining who will become the blue’s next vice-captain, he might consider club seniority, leadership, characteristics, and the player’s performance within the team
Without further ado, we will examine three individuals that could become the future vice-captain of Chelsea.
3 Mateo Kovacic
Mateo Kovacic is among the favorites for the vice-captain position at Chelsea. The former Real Madrid star is one of Chelsea’s most experienced, decorated, and long-tenured players. The 28-year-old initially joined Chelsea onthe loan from Real Madrid in 2018, before making the transfer permanent the following year. Since then, he has been a significant player for the team.Since joining the club, Kovacic has played alongside Jorginho, which has afforded him leadership experience. His ability to read and control the game from the center of the the field makes him an excellent candidate for the leadership position.
The dynamic midfielder has registered a goal and an assist in 22 appearances across all competitions for the West London club this season.
2 Thiago Silva
When it comes to leaders in the current Chelsea group, the experienced defender Thiago Silva cannot be surpassed. He has the most experience of any Blues player and is the team’s senior member.
The 38-year-old served as captain of the Paris Saint-Germain before joining Chelsea. Additionally, he is the current captain of the Brazilian national team.
Despite his age, he continues to deliver top-tier performances for Graham Potter’s team each time he gets onto the field. In the absence of Azpilicueta, he may lead the squad from behind as the backbone of Chelsea’s defense. He captained the West London club against Fulham (their first game since Jorginho’s departure), but he has not yet
been officially made vice-captain. Silva would be the ideal replacement on and off the field.
1 N’Golo Kante
The Frenchman N’Golo Kante should also be considered for the vice-captaincy. If Potter chooses to select his deputy leader based on seniority, the small defensive midfielder is among the leading candidates. After Azpilicueta, the 31-year-old is the second-longest-serving member of the club. Kante is one of the few players to win consecutive Premier League titles with two different clubs after joining Chelsea in 2016 from Leicester City. In recent years, he has played a pivotal role in the club’s success, and the supporters adore him. However, Kante is not one of the more vocal players on the field, and Potter may overlook him for the role because of this. The two-time Premier League champion has also endured reoccurring ailments that have caused him to miss a significant amount of games in recent months. This may diminish his chances of being elected vice-captain.
This season, Kante has only appeared twice for the Blues, totaling 175 minutes across all competitions.
