Recently, an unconfirmed report which has since gone viral on social media suggested that Paris Saint Germain star Achraf Hakimi who is on the verge of a divorce played a fast one on his estranged wife and mother of his two children.
The report which surfaced on Friday, April 14, claims that during the court proceedings of the divorce, the estranged wife of the footballer found out through her lawyers that Hakimi’s bank accounts were empty as he had transferred all his money and registered his assets to his mother’s name, leaving the wife nothing to part with.
At Brace Radio, we look at 5 famous Sports Personalities that suffered a major financial setback after divorce settlement.
1. Evander Holyfield
Evander Holyfield was one of the best boxers of his generation and was the undisputed heavyweight champion of the world four times in his illustrious career. He retired from boxing officially in 2014 after nearly a thirty-year career that started in 1985. He made an estimated $205 million from boxing and endorsements during that time.
It is hard to imagine how Holyfield lost most of that fortune, but all of his marriages definitely factored into the equation. Holyfield was married and divorced three times. In 1991 he settled with his first wife Paulette Holyfield for $4 million, which was a large sum of money at that time. Evander bought a $14 million mansion with his third wife Candi Holyfield, but the house was foreclosed on in 2010 when the couple filed for divorce. It is unclear who got what in the divorce, and by that time there was not much more money Evander had to give.
2. Tiger Woods
Tiger Woods is a big name in Golf and a former Masters Champion
Tiger’s fall from grace happened in 2010 when his wife caught him cheating with a parade of party girls and film stars through text messages and calls on his cell phone. She chased after him with a nine iron and he crashed their SUV into a tree. His ex-wife Elin Nordegren walked away with a settlement worth over $100 million and his sponsors pulled back like crazy as he nearly lost his livelihood. He didn’t go all the way broke, but definitely came close!
3. Mike Tyson
Mike Tyson is perhaps the most intimidating boxer to ever step foot in the ring.
Tyson has been divorced multiple times, most notably in 1988 when he was separated from his then-wife Robin Givens. In a memoir written in 2013 Tyson claimed that Givens and her ruthless mother conspired to make millions off of him. He says they got married because she claimed to be pregnant. However three months into the pregnancy she had not gained a single pound and then she claimed to have miscarried the child. The two never signed a prenuptial agreement, so she received a settlement of more than $10 million. Tyson isn’t broke, but that is a lot of money and a horrible way to lose it.
4. Emmanuel Eboue
Emmanuel Eboué is a 39-year-old Ivorian former professional footballer who played as a right-back.
Eboue had three children with his former Belgian wife, Aurélie, whom he married before joining Arsenal.
In December 2017, Eboué told the Sunday Mirror that he was poor and homeless due to his divorce and bad investments under his former wife’s control.
The 39-year-old said the divorce drove him to the brink of suicide after his wife, Aurelie, allegedly took everything he had, including their three children, mansion, cars, and their first house in North London, where he was ordered by a court to surrender ownership.
5. Ryan Giggs
Giggs married his long-time partner, Stacey Cooke, in a private ceremony on 7 September 2007.
They have two children, both born in Salford, and lived in Worsley, Greater Manchester, close to where the player grew up.
Stacey had stood by the former Manchester United player, even after he had an affair with his brother’s wife.
However, in 2016, his then-wife Stacey filed for a divorce, as he was set to lose half his £40 million fortune.
After Mrs. Giggs heard her husband had flirted with waitresses at a restaurant he owns close to his £6 million mansion in Worsley, near Manchester, she began proceedings to push ahead with the divorce.
In 2017, The Mirror reported that Ryan and Stacey Giggs’ marriage was eventually dissolved in just 43 seconds in a divorce settlement worth £40m.
