Bianca Andreescu was taken off the court in a wheelchair due to a lower left leg injury in the second set of her match against 18th-seeded Ekaterina Alexandrova at the Miami Open on Monday night.
The 2019 U.S. Open champion was moving across the baseline when she fell to the court, clutching her lower left leg while screaming.
The broadcast from the court picked up Andreescu saying, “I’ve never felt this kind of pain before” before she was attended to.
It was quite an emotional scene as everyone on the court, from the chair umpire to the tournament officials, came over with ice, towels and their support.
The peak of it all was the sight of Andreescu’s family in the stands, with tears streaming down their faces while reacting to the injury.
Her opponent, Alexandrova also stood beside her and even shared an emotional hug with her before she was wheeled off a short moment later to a standing ovation.
However, there is still no word on the nature of the 22-year-old’s injury or its severity.
Andreescu had lost the first set 7-6 (7) and was working towards a comeback in the second set, with the Canadian already winning the first two games before she was forced to retire on the night at the Hard Rock Stadium allowing Alexandrova to progress to the next round.
Alexandrova will now face Petra Kvitova in the quarter finals who had earlier defeated Varvara Gracheva 7-5, 7-6 (7) on monday as well.
