The Dozy Mmobuosi Foundation, in partnership with the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) and under the auspices of the Nigeria Premier Football League Ltd by Guaranty, is excited to announce the return of an expanded and more lucrative 2023 Dozy Mmobuosi Super Cup Football Tournament. This year’s edition will feature 12 of the top teams from the Nigerian Professional Football League (NPFL).
A record-breaking ₦1.2 billion prize pool has been established for the tournament. The winning team will walk away with ₦1 billion, while the runners-up will receive ₦200 million. Additionally, each participating team will be granted an appearance fee of ₦20 million.
Dozy Mmobuosi explains that the decision to expand the tournament to include 12 top teams from the previous season was made in response to growing demand from fans and stakeholders for more high-level football action. “The increased funding will allow teams to invest more resources in players, facilities, and infrastructure, attracting top talent to the league, and raising the overall standard of football in Nigeria,” Mmobuosi added.
Hon. Gbenga Elegbeleye, Chairman of the NPFL Interim Management Committee, has welcomed the partnership between the Nigeria Professional Football League and the Dozy Mmobuosi Foundation for the 2023 Dozy Mmobuosi Super Cup Football Tournament. Elegbeleye sees the tournament as a fantastic opportunity to showcase the talent in the league, promote Nigerian football to a broader audience, and inspire teams and players to contribute to the growth of the sport in the country.
Davidson Owumi, Head of Operations at the NPFL, also expressed enthusiasm for the collaboration with the Dozy Mmobuosi Foundation and the potential for increased funding to attract talent and elevate football in Nigeria.
To ensure the smooth and successful execution of the tournament, a joint organising committee has been established. Comprising members from both the Dozy Mmobuosi Foundation and the Nigeria Professional Football League, the committee will work together to manage various aspects of the event.
Ebuwa Martins Agbonwaneten, CEO of The Dozy Mmobuosi Foundation, emphasised the foundation’s commitment to using sports as a means for social and economic development. He said, “The Dozy Mmobuosi Super Cup Football Tournament is an excellent platform to promote the growth and development of Nigerian football. We look forward to another successful tournament and the opportunity to showcase the best of Nigerian football.”
The inaugural edition of the Dozy Mmobuosi Super Cup took place in November 2022 at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Lagos, where Shooting Stars SC of Ibadan emerged as the champions, winning the first prize of ₦100 million. Enyimba FC of Aba claimed the runner-up position, earning prize money of ₦30 million. Additionally, each participating team received an appearance fee of ₦10 million.
