Los Angeles Lakers superstar forward LeBron James got many NBA fans stunned when he disclosed that he does not know if it would be the last time in the NBA as an active player in an interview after his side got swept off in the Western Conference finals playoffs by the Nuggets on Monday night.
James ended his news conference by telling reporters, “Going forward with the game of basketball, I’ve got a lot to think about.”
Following the news conference, James was asked to elaborate on his statement.
Interviewer: When you say you got to think about stuff, what thread should we be pulling on that?
James: “If I want to continue to play”
Interviewer: As in next year?
James: “Yeah.”
Interviewer: You would walk away?
James: “I got to think about it.”
It was a sad ending to his 20th NBA season after his side – the Los Angeles Lakers lost unceremoniously to the Denver Nuggets 113-111 in Game 4 (4-0 ) in the conference finals although he scored 40 points, 10 rebounds and 9 assists, playing all but four seconds of the game.
James, 38, still has one season left on his contract with the Lakers, worth $46.7 million for 2023-24, and a player option for the following season worth $50.4 million.
It should also be recalled that over the years, James has repeatedly made it known that he wants to play in the league with his oldest son, Bronny, before he retires. That alone has been the conviction of many NBA enthusiasts that the King won’t retire until his son makes it to the league.
Time will most definitely tell if we’ve seen the end of the career of one of the greatest ever player in the history of the game or maybe the king will be back again next season.
