The La Liga side had to activate economic levers to complete players’ signings in the summer transfer window and relied on players taking wage cuts so the club could stay afloat.
One player who has felt the pinch of the wage reductions is one of the club captains, Sergi Roberto. Roberto recently opened up about his salary at the Blaugrana, highlighting how much less he earns now.
“Right now, I am earning as if I came from the B team, but I do it with pride because I want to be here.” Roberto further explained that it was not a salary reduction, as first believed, and that it was not about the money.
“I did not have to reduce my salary because my contract ended. We had to negotiate a new one. The other captains have also made an economic effort. Two years ago, we were the only ones who did it. We made an effort, but we didn’t want to say anything,” he added.
