Manchester City cut Arsenal’s lead on the top of the Premier league table to two points as they defeated the Magpies 2-0 at the Eithad.
Goals from Phil Foden and Bernardo Silva in either half were enough for the Citizens to clinch all three points.
The defeat means that Newcastle has now suffered back-to-back league defeats for the first time since May 2022. The Magpies lost a chance to lift a trophy since 1969 when they lost to Manchester United in the Carabao Cup final last time out.
Manchester City were dominant early in the game having more of the ball and creating chances. They were rewarded in the 15th minute when a beautiful play from Phil Foden created space for him to shoot from six yards out after beating four Newcastle defenders and unleashing his shot on goal which took a little deflection from a defender to beat Nick Pope at the Newcastle’s goal.
Despite Manchester City’s dominance, Newcastle tried to hurt on the break and they got a nice opportunity for an equalizer when Kieran Trippier put a nice ball across for Callum Wilson to equalize but the striker flopped his lines.
Manchester City resumed from where they left off in the first half and kept on applying pressure on the Magpies’ defence. A nice run from Jack Grealish and a beautiful pass to Erling Haaland set up a nice goal from second-half substitute Bernardo Silva.
The Magpies tried to get a consolidation for the travelling fans but the Manchester City defence stood strong to avert danger from Newcastle’s late counterattacks
Ederson claimed his 100th Premier League clean sheet as the citizens march closer to the leaders, Arsenal who have a game later today against Bournemouth.
