Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has named his top five greatest players of all time, placing newly crowned World Cup winner Lionel Messi at the summit.
The Argentina star grabbed the headlines after leading his country to their first World Cup in 36 years, finally winning the trophy that has eluded him for so long.
In as much as others think otherwise, Messi is by far the most decorated on the list of some of the best to have played the game.
In a list shared on social media, Carragher named the Argentine captain as his all-time best, on a list which also includes Messi’s compatriot Diego Maradona.
“1: Messi, 2: Maradona, 3: Pele, 4: Ronaldo, 5: Zidane,” he wrote on Twitter.
Pele remains the only player to have won the World Cup three times, while Ronaldo sits behind Messi as the player with the most Ballon d’Or awards. Zidane won the World Cup as well as the Ballon d’Or in 1998.
