The majority of the members of the South American football confederation (CONMEBOL) have invited Morocco to participate in the final of the Copa America 2024. The competition will celebrate its 48th edition and will take place between June and July in Ecuador .
As a reminder, the Copa America is the only football event in the world in which a team from outside the continent participates as guest of honor. Indeed, given its composition with only 10 teams, CONMEBOL therefore invites non-CONMEBOL teams to participate in the tournament. This makes it possible to complete the 3 pools of the 4 teams, which avoids to have odd hens.
In 2019, for example, CONMEBOL invited Qatar and Japan to come and play South American football.
First scheduled in 2023, the year 2024 stems from CONMEBOL’s choice to organize the Copa America in even years from 2024, giving rise to a balance of the international calendar with the other confederations, except the African.
