Former World No 1, Novak Djokovic is set to return to the US Open this year after the US Senate voted to lift Covid-19 measures on Wednesday.
It should be recalled that the 22-time grandslam winner has not played tennis in the United States since the 2021 US Open and has already missed out of both the Miami Open and Indian Wells in the US this year due to his vaccination status.
During the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, The United States passed a law for international visitors to show proof of vaccination before they can be granted access into the country, and the veteran Serb has refused to take the vaccine jab which made him ineligible to participate in any tournament in the country ever since then.
It was reported that he applied for a special permission but his request to play in Miami and at Indian Wells was rejected. He said afterwards that he had no regrets missing out on both competitions tagged the double sunshine.
However, on Wednesday, the US Senate passed a bill that will end the Covid-19 restrictions that were put in place by former President Donald Trump on March 13, 2020.
The bill, which was cleared by the House of Representatives earlier this year, will now been sent to the current President Joe Biden, who is expected to sign it.
Djokovic, 35, has won the US Open title three times, the last in 2018, and has finished as the runner-up six times in the tournament. Djokovic also won the first grandslam of the year in Australia, and he will be hoping to also enjoy another triumphant return to the US Open in September.
