André Onana has announced his retirement from international football at the age of 26.
His seemingly shocking decision may not be unconnected to the fallout he had with Rigobert Song, coach of the Cameroonian national team at the just concluded World Cup in Qatar where it was reported that both individuals were involved in a shouting match over the latter’s goalkeeping styles. The altercation saw Onana miss the last two group games of Cameroon as he prematurely left the camp of the Indomitable Lions.
Onana in a statement said: “But every story, however beautiful it may be, has its end. And my story with the Cameroonian national team has come to an end. Players come and go, and names are fleeting, but Cameroon comes before any person or player. Cameroon remains eternal and so does my love for the national team and for our people who have always supported us no matter how difficult the moment was.”
André Onana made his national team debut on September 6 in a 2 – 1 friendly over Gabon and he was capped 34 times. It waits to be seen if Onana will rescind his decision anytime soon.
