It’s no news that the French club has been knocked out of the UCL once again. PSG has been looking for UCL glory since Qatari sports investment chairman Nasser Al-Khelaifiha acquired the French club in 2012 and the club has been signing some of the best players since then.
The 10 times Ligue 1 champions have spent over €1.5b since the takeover by Nasser Al-Khelaifiha signing big-name players like Neymar, Messi, Mbappe, Di Maria, Thiago Silva, David Luiz, Sergio Ramos, Cavani, and many others. They were also responsible for breaking the transfer fee record when they signed Neymar from Barcelona paying his release clause of €222m in 2017.
The signings have paid off massively considering the fact that they have won 27 trophies since the takeover by Qatari sports investment. Winning 8 league titles, 6 French cups, 6 French league cup winners, and 9 French super cups. Winning these trophies with managers like Carlo Ancelloti, Pochetinno, and Thomas Tuchel.
PSG have massively been successful over the years and cementing their place as one of the big boys in European football. But they continue to fall short when it comes to the biggest trophy in European competitions the UEFA champions league trophy. PSG has never won any European cup before and they have been knocking ever since the QSI takeover but all their efforts have been in vain.
Every season people have tipped PSG to win the UCL because they always have some of the best players money can buy, but PSG always gets knocked out every season. They had the opportunity to reach the final for the first time in the 19/20 season when they faced Bayern Munich. PSG was beaten 1-0.
PSG later on reinforced in the 2021/2022 season when they landed Lionel Messi and Sergio Ramos on free transfer from Spanish giants Barcelona and Real Madrid. Young prospect Achraf Hakimi also joining the same transfer window.
PSG was the Favorite to win the UCL that season with the prospect of Neymar, Mbappe, and Lionel Messi leading the line but they couldn’t get past the knockout phase and were dumped out by Real Madrid who later went on to win it.
This year they faced the German giant Bayern Munich in the knockout phase after failing to finish top of their group which they came second. They were beaten in both legs of the ties. They are now been forced out of the UCL from KO stages for the second time in a row.
This PSG story proves that money can’t buy you success in football and it’s not about fielding the best players in the world, it’s about getting them to work together.
