It’s no more news that Julian Naggelsman has been sacked as Bayern Munich coach and and has been replaced with former Borrusia Dortmund, PSG and Chelsea coach Thomas Tuchel.
With 100% winning record in the UEFA Champions League so far and a 2nd place standing on the Bundesliga table, it was shocking for many football fans across the world to come to terms as regards why the 35-year old was sacked. Even though he has been linked with an instant return to another job at Real Madrid and Tottenham Hotspur respectively, it is still important for people to know what led to the decision to fire the German tactician and five major reasons have been identified
1. Nagelsmann worked a lot with tactics but found it difficult to manage the cast. Reserves complained about how the coach dealt with them, as he only communicated with the starters. There was tension and no rapport on a personal level with some players. The cast as a whole was no longer on JN’s side, on the contrary, they were against him. The dressing room leaders questioned his tactical decisions – the only exception was Joshua Kimmich, who was by his side until the end.
2. There was neglect of young talent. They only had contact (if any) with assistants Dino Topmöller and Xaver Zembrod. The board considers that, except for Jamal Musiala (who had already been introduced by Hansi Flick), no youngster has gained space. Mathys Tel, Paul Wanner, Ryan Gravenberch and Arijon Ibrahimović are great gems of the club that were “forgotten” by Nagelsmann.
3. Negative performance in the Bundesliga with a high risk of losing the title. In addition, the directors felt that Nagelsmann did not perform consistently and that he did not extract the maximum from the individual quality of the players, especially from most of the reinforcements for this season.
4. Players and management were taken by surprise by JN going skiing on vacation while the team had to train on that FIFA date. Internally, this was a very negative sign.
5. The board’s original plan was to finish the season with Nagelsmann and then, depending on the results, consider Tuchel. However, the fact that Real Madrid and Tottenham were on the lookout for the coach made Bayern act immediately. They believe Thomas Tuchel will bring new momentum to the team and trust him to win the double crown (which they no longer believed JN to do)
