Frank Lampard has been appointed as the caretaker coach for Chelsea until the end of the season. He will replace Graham Potter in the dugout for the time being.
Lampard had previously been in charge of the Blues but was sacked after a run of poor results. Before his sack, he labelled the Chelsea side that won the UEFA Champions League in the 2020/2021 season under Thomas Tuchel as not “good enough,” laying credence to critics who deem him not good enough to coach at the top level.
The former Chelsea player was subsequently in charge of Everton where he did a decent job of preserving the Premier League status of the Toffees in his first season despite being appointed midway into the 2021/2022 season.
However, Everton management disposed of him earlier this season after driving the club into another relegation struggle.
Lampard’s appointment took many by surprise, but fortunately for him, he now has another opportunity to prove critics wrong.
Don’t get me wrong. No one expects Lampard to win the Champions League or get them into the top four, he was brought in to stabilise the club and lay the foundation for the new manager.
Lampard has to make sure Chelsea gives Real Madrid a run for their money at least and put in a run of wins together in the Premier League.
Nobody will be surprised if they get knocked out of the Champions League but if they do embarrassingly and continue their poor run of form in the league, it will add more stain to an already stained CV.
The deficiency in the current Chelsea squad is obvious but the former Chelsea player must find a way to get the best out of the litany of talents at Stamford Bridge at the moment.
If Chelsea’s abysmal run continues under Lampard, it will be difficult to see him get another shot as a top team manager.
Use this time wisely, Frank.
