Liverpool fans saw their side put up another abysmal performance in a barren draw against Chelsea on Saturday. The Reds have won just 2 of their last 6 Premier League games and are 10 points adrift of 4th placed Manchester United having played one game lesser than Erik Ten Haag’s men.
Here are 3 things that must happen for Liverpool to salvage anything from this season
1. They have to sign a transformative midfielder
What do I mean? Liverpool needs to sign a midfielder in this window that can lift the spirit of Jurgen Klopp’s men. They need a transformative signing.
A player that would make an immediate impact like Virgil Van Dijk did when he arrived in January 2018.
Postponing midfield reinforcement to the summer will be self-sabotage for Liverpool.
Liverpool has a lot of midfield options at the moment, the majority of whom are either jaded, past their prime, or consistently injured.
Should this window close without Liverpool getting a quality midfielder, it is difficult to see how the Reds will achieve anything tangible this season.
2. Jurgen Klopp needs to fix himself
Klopp has experimented a lot with this Liverpool side and made some baffling tactical decisions since the start of the season and it has cost them dearly.
For instance, he started by playing Mohammed Salah wide on the right-hand side of the attack. This prevented Salah from getting into dangerous positions like he always does. Why would you attempt to fix what is not broken?
Klopp must begin to play his available players in their best position and that is not all.
The German tactician must also play in-form players just like he did against Chelsea and not players who are badly out of form. He needs to let everyone realize that they have to fight for their place on the team.
Lastly, his in-game management has got to be better. He needs to start making the right substitutions at the right time. For instance, Trent Alexander Arnold and Darwin Nunez could have come on earlier than they did against Chelsea and we could see the difference when both came on Saturday.
3. Mohammed Salah and Darwin Nunez have to be more clinical
Despite Liverpool’s struggles in the defense and the midfield, Jurgen Klopp’s side remains one of the most dangerous sides in attack in the league.
They have the second most expected goals(goals expected to be scored from chances created) in the league at the moment but they are the fifth top scorer in the league.
This is partly down to Salah and Nunez’s profligacy in front of the goal. Liverpool is the only side with two players in the top 10 of players with big chances missed.
Salah and Nunez have missed 27 big chances in the Premier League this season. If Liverpool is to make the top 4 or make a deep run in the Champions League and the FA cup, then they need both of them at their clinical best.
