It was a fascinating encounter between Manchester United and Leeds United at Old Trafford. Erik Ten Haag’s side had to show tenacity as they battled from a 2-0 deficit to salvage a draw in the encounter.
Wilfried Gnonto set the pace for the encounter as he scored just 55 seconds after the start of the game after Bruno Fernandes carelessly lost the ball.
Manchester United fought tooth and nail to restore parity before the end of the first half but Leeds held their ground.
It was Alejandro Garnacho who looked the liveliest for the Red Devils in the first half and it was not surprising that United’s best chances fell to him.
A Raphael Varane own goal would get Leeds United to dreamland as the Peacock faithful thought they were about to get their first victory at Old Trafford since 1981. However, United had other plans.
Marcus Rashford scored his 20th goal of the season and 7th after the World cup to breathe some life into the game for the third-placed team.
It was substitute Jadon Sancho who would finally restore parity for the Red Devils in the 70th minute as United seek to extend their 13-match winning streak at Old Trafford. It was Sancho’s first goal since September 15 when he scored in Manchester United’s 2-1 win over fierce rival, Liverpool.
Leeds refuted all attempts by Man United to get a third as they took away a point back to Elland Road. They would be disappointed that they lost a 2-goal lead but half a loaf is better than none.
For United, they missed the chance to close the gap on Premier League leaders, Arsenal to 5 points but Erik Ten Haag will take solace in the fact that his team fought back from a 2-goal deficit.
This is not the end of the meeting between both sides this season as Leeds United will host Manchester United on Sunday at Elland Road in the reverse fixture.
