The Honorable Commissioner for Youth and Sports in Oyo State Asiwaju Seun Fakorede has debunked the news that the Nigeria U23 National team popularly called “Olympic Eagles” abandoned The Lekan Salami Stadium in Ibadan as the venue of the 1st leg of the U23 AFCON qualifier against Guinea because of the bad state of the recently refurbished stadium
The U23 team is currently camping in Abuja and will play the all-important qualifier at the MKO Abiola Stadium, Abuja according to the NFF. While explaining the major reason the game was moved away from Ibadan, the commissioner said “Neither the NFF nor the Sports Ministry said the game was moved because our stadium is not good enough to host the Olympic Eagles, the game was moved because of the election postponement. Since the game was scheduled for March 22nd, the Nigeria contingent for the game is expected to arrive in Ibadan on Monday which is only two days after the rescheduled Election Day, and since nobody can predict the mood of the country after the election, it will not be wise to fly from Abuja to Lagos and embark on a road trip to Ibadan. Meanwhile, since there will not be an election in Abuja, it’s just wise for them to remain in Abuja where they’ve camping to play the game”
Asiwaju Seun Fakorede made the clarification while featuring as a guest on Fresh FM 105.9, Ibadan on the program “Fresh Sports” with Kenny Ogunmiloro on Wednesday
On the IMC letter written to 3SC to make the football pitch of the Lekan Salami Stadium better or risk being banished to another venue, the honorable Commissioner assures the fans of the club that there is no cause for alarm, he further promises that 3SC will remain at their traditional home ground for the 2nd stanza of the league
