Nigerian-born, former Nigeria Premier Football League forward Elijah Ani is on the verge of switching allegiance to Rwanda.
Ani signed for Rwanda Premier League side Bugesera FC last summer after departing Lobi Stars.
According to the update from Rwanda, Ani has been handed a call-up for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier and is already in camp with the Amavubi.
The Rwanda Football Association has approached FIFA for his clearance but is yet to be cleared to play the qualifier.
“Ani is a talented footballer and a great personality. Our federation is liaising with FIFA if he can be in the team for the next World Cup qualifiers,” the team coach Frank Spittler said.
We called him to camp and he is training with us to ensure that he gets ready to play in upcoming qualifiers once the clearance comes out positive. Some of the FIFA rules on nationality switch changed last month and I am positive he will be cleared. I want to use him against Benin and Lesotho if he is cleared, that is why he is still with us, he added
Rwanda is in the same group as Nigeria’s Super Eagles.
Apart from Lobi Stars, Ani also played for Rangers and Warri Wolves
