The ever-exciting Manchester derby lived up to the vibe as Manchester City came out victorious in a nine-goal thriller against their Manchester counterparts Manchester United. The 188th Manchester derby at Eithad stadium saw Manchester city thump Manchester United 6-3.
It was a no-miss game as goals kept coming in with an average of one goal every ten minutes. Manchester City dominated the game from start to finish. Phil Foden scored as early as the 8th minute of the game and later scored his first career hat-trick, with other goals in the 44th minute and 73rd minute, respectively.
Erling Haaland scored his third consecutive hat-trick(34’, 37’ and 64’) in his third consecutive home game, becoming the first player in the premier league to do so. He shattered the record for the fewest games needed to score three hat-tricks.
He did so in eight games beating Michael Owen’s previous mark of 48 games. Erling Haaland also added two assists to his name. This is Manchester United’s third loss in the premier league.
Only four Manchester City players have scored hat-tricks in the Manchester derby, with two of them coming up on Sunday afternoon. A sublime goal from Anthony and two goals from a second-half substitute Anthony Martial (84′ and 90+1′ penalty) weren’t enough for the Erik Ten Hagg side to avoid defeat.
This defeat means Erik Ten Hagg becomes the sixth manager since Alex Ferguson’s retirement to lose his first derby.
The Dutchman had his manager of the month award short-lived after a traumatic afternoon at the Etihad Stadium. The result of the match indicates that the former champions Manchester City are still second on the premier league table on 20 points behind Arsenal by one point. In comparison, Manchester United is sixth with 12 points.
