The first non-fungible token (NFT) in the history of Barcelona, honoring Johan Cruyff, sold for $693,000 on Friday at an auction held by Sotheby’s in New York.
In the cinematic digital artwork NFT, Cruyff’s 1973 goal against Atletico Madrid—who would later become the club’s coach—is artistically reenacted.
The auction winner will also receive other privileges, including as access to training sessions, and be designated a digital ambassador at the Catalan club in addition to receiving ownership rights to the NFT.
According to a statement, “The Barca digital ambassador will also be able to take advantage of a number of’money can’t buy’ experiences.”
Barcelona will include a number of services in the NFT’s smart contract, including meet-and-greets, excursions to La Masia (the club’s academy), hospitality rights (for a minimum of five years), the ability to play at Camp Nou, and the formal passing of the ball before to a friendly game.
In a molten gold animation, the song “In a Way, Immortal” retells Cruyff’s mission. It was made by a 40-person team of Hollywood computer graphics and visual effects artists.
