The organizer of the highly anticipated International friendly match between World champions Argentina and Nigeria’s Super Eagles has announced the game has been cancelled.
The cancellation was announced on Friday after the authority of Hangzhou, China the venue of the match said they no longer host the game.
The game was put off after Lionel Messi failed to show up with his team Inter Miami in a warm-up and his absence sparked a huge controversy.
As a commercial event, a company and the Argentinean soccer team negotiated that the team would play a friendly match in March this year in the city of Hangzhou,” the Hangzhou authorities said in a statement.
“For the current well-known reasons, according to the competent authorities, conditions to hold the friendly match are not mature, therefore (we) have decided to cancel it.”
It was not yet clear if Argentina’s other friendly against Ivory Coast in Beijing will also be cancelled.
