Kelechi Promise Iheanacho was on the scoresheet for Leicester City in their 4-1 thumping of Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday. That made it 2 goals in 2 games for Iheanacho having scored in the victory over Aston Villa the previous week.
Iheanacho has started 3 Premier League games for Leicester City this season and has scored 3 goals and assisted 3 in all the games he has started. He has the same number of goals as Patson Daka who has started 9 games this season and more goals than Jamie Vardy who has 1 goal all season. Why does Brendan Rodgers keep ignoring the Nigerian striker?
The first time Iheanacho proved to Rodgers that he deserves a starting spot was towards the end of the 2020/2021 season. He formed a devastating partnership with Vardy scoring 11 goals and registering 2 assists in 13 Premier League games.
However, that proved not to be enough as he only started 3 of Leicester City‘s first 10 Premier League games in the following 2021/2022 season. That did not affect the tenacity of Seniorman Kelz as he is fondly called did not relent. He netted 4 goals and registered 4 assists in the 11 games he started that season.
The Nigerian striker’s return, whenever he started games, was more than that of Patson Daka who was preferred to him. The Zambian had 4 goals and 2 assists despite starting more games (13) than Iheanacho.
With Vardy ageing and looking like a shadow of his brilliant best, Iheanacho should be starting more games than any other striker at the King Power stadium. The former Manchester City striker has proven that he can be trusted. There is no better time for Rodgers to make maximum use of Iheanacho’s talents other than now as the Foxes continue their fight to stay off the relegation zone.
If Iheanacho continues his good form in front of goal between now and the end of the season, he should be named the apparent heir to Jamie Vardy’s crown. That would also mean Leicester can save money to spend elsewhere on bolstering the squad in the summer.
