For the first time in the history of motorsports, Cape Town will be included on the Formula E 2023 calendar.
Keen watchers of motorsports sports were expecting Formula 1 to return to Africa next season but an agreement could not be reached. But with the FIA’s pledge to take the sport to new location, Cape Town will be a new destination for the “electric version” of Formula 1.
Formula E, officially the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship, is a single-seater motorsport championship for electric cars.
In a world where sports has been heavily involved in the fight for sustainability of the planet and reducing carbon emissions, Formula E is the only version of motorsports that has a net zero carbon emission because all cars run on electric batteries. The current generation of Formula E cars can reach a top speed of 322km/hr.
Cape Town will be the second city in Africa to host a race in Formula E after Marrakesh in 2022.
