World Cup defending champions, France have defeated Poland by 3 goals to 1 in the first game of the round of 16 matches at the Al Thumama Stadium.
A match that saw French striker Olivier Giroud overtakes Thierry Henry as the player with the most goals for Les Bleus after he opened the scoring just before halftime. This intensity was maintained after resumption from the break and it was due to brave goalkeeping by Poland’s WojciechSzczęsny which kept the Polish in the game.
Polish hearts were shattered when Kylian Mbappé scored two wonderful goals, the first in the 74th minute and the winner in the 91st. Robert Lewandowski got a consolation goal for Poland when he scored after retaking a penalty kick in the 9th minute of extra time.
France will now await the winners of the England vs Senegal for a quarterfinal match-up on the 10th of December.
