Sports Minister John Enoh has issued a rallying cry to the Super Eagles, emphasizing the crucial importance of qualifying for the upcoming World Cup. Following Nigeria’s heartbreaking loss to Ghana in the final phase of qualification for the 2022 World Cup, the stakes are higher than ever for the national team.
With the next edition set to span three countries in North America, Nigeria’s qualification campaign has begun on shaky ground, marked by two draws in their opening two games. Minister Enoh, speaking on Channels TV’s Sports Tonight, stressed that the Super Eagles cannot afford another miss on the global stage.
“Given our disappointing start and our absence from the last World Cup, we must leave no stone unturned to secure our spot in the next tournament,” Enoh declared. “After our commendable performance in the recent AFCON, there’s an expectation to build on that momentum and push forward.”
To clinch qualification, Nigeria will face stiff competition from formidable opponents such as South Africa, Benin Republic, Zimbabwe, Rwanda, and Lesotho. Despite their impressive runner-up finish in the recent AFCON tournament, where they fell to Ivory Coast in the final, the Super Eagles know that only qualification for the World Cup will truly cement their status as a footballing powerhouse in Africa and beyond.
