David Ojih and Prestige Archibong, both Nigerian players, emerged as victors in the U-19 and U-15 categories at the Winifred Awosika African Youth Scrabble Championship. Held at Chrislands School, Lekki, Lagos, the championship welcomed participants from Kenya, Liberia, Ghana, Uganda, and Nigeria.
In the U-19 division, David triumphed after 24 rounds of intense play, securing the championship with 19 wins and 5 losses. Joy Ola secured second place with 28 wins and a cumulative score of plus 1097. Nigeria’s Lateef Musa claimed third with 17 victories and a cumulative score of plus 1012.
In the U-15 category, Prestige Archibong emerged victorious with 16 wins and a cumulative score spread of plus 2614. Quodos Aliu took second place with 13 wins and a cumulative score spread of plus 1358. Clinton Imode secured third among the 88 participants from five countries.
The champions received a combined prize of $9,000 and valuable gifts such as laptops, tablets, and smartphones. In the PANASA President’s Cup, Nigerian player Godwin Victor outplayed former world champion Wellington Jighere to seize victory, earning $5,000 and the Gbenga Ojofeitimi trophy with a cumulative points total of plus 101 in the final. The President’s Cup attracted players from various countries including Botswana, Cameroon, Ghana, Kenya, Liberia, Sierra Leone, The Gambia, Uganda, the USA, and Nigeria.
