Pre-tournament favorites Brazil had a strong performance against Serbia in their opening match of the current World Cup after two second-half goals from Tottenham’s forward Richarlison gave the South American giants maximum points on the night.
A star-studded Seleção captained by Thiago Silva hit the ground running from the first minute but failed to pull the trigger when it mattered most. Neymar himself had an audacious attempt straight from the corner arc but VanjaMilinković-Savić stood firm to divert it over his bar. Alex Sandro and Casemiro saw their long-range efforts hit the bar. However, the breakthrough goal for Brazil came in the 62nd minute when Richarlison pounced from close range. The Tottenham man later had a “goal of the tournament” contender when his acrobatic efforts for the second goal gave Brazil all 3 points to lead the group.
Brazil last won the World Cup in 2002 when it was co-hosted by Korea and Japan and with the likes of star players like Neymar Jr hinting that this World Cup will be his last, it is expected that he will like to enjoy the ovation with the greatest trophy in his hands.
Brazil’s next game will be on Monday, 28th November against the Swiss national league while Cameroon engages Serbia in an attempt to revive the World Cup journey.
