Saviour Godwin is a left winger who plays for Casa Pia in the Portuguese Primeira Liga. He was part of of the Nigeria u17 World cup winning team in 2013 featuring the likes of Kelechi Iheanacho, Isaac Success and Taiwo Adeniyi. Unlike his teammates, he has had a slow growth to his professional career.
Godwin began his European professional football career with KV Oostende in Belgium but struggled to get playing time. He played only 22 minutes for Oostende despite scoring on his debut.
He went on to join Belgian second-tier side Roeselare with whom he signed a 3-year deal in the 2016/2017 season. Godwin had an impressive start to his Roeselare’s career scoring 3 goals in his first 5 games but saw his minutes reduced after he couldn’t maintain consistency for his struggling team.
Godwin finally hit his best form in the 2018/2019 season for Roeselare scoring 7 goals and notching 3 assists. He left the Belgian side after the 2019/2020 season after they got into financial troubles.
The 26-year-old joined Casa Pia in the Liga Portugal 2 for the 20202/2021 season and he helped them win promotion back to Primeira Liga after 83 years. Godwin notched 10 goals and received the second division player of the year.
The former U17 world cup winner has played a part in Casa Pia’s pursuit of a stay in the top flight scoring 3 goals and registering one assist so far.
If he continues to improve, it is only a matter of time before he joined his former colleague, Kelechi Iheanacho in the Super Eagles team.
