Atalanta BC starts their Serie A campaign against Sassuolo at Mapei Stadium after an impressive transfer window. Last season, Atalanta finished fifth securing their return to Europe while Sassuolo had another bottom-half placing but aims to improve this year.
Atalanta begins their pursuit of success in both Serie A and the Europa League after qualifying for the latter last season. In the pre-season, they beat Bournemouth, lost to Union Berlin, and drew with domestic rivals Juventus.
They have won their last five opening matches and scored the most goals on matchday one in the last five Serie A campaigns, tying with Napoli at 15. Before the clash on Sunday, it’s worth noting that Sassuolo has never lost in five home Serie A season openers, with two wins and three draws.
However, the team hasn’t won a league match since April and only earned two points from their last six matches of the 2022-23 campaign, causing them to drop down the table into obscurity.
After drawing 1-1 with Wolfsburg in their final two friendlies, Sassuolo won their first competitive match of the new season against Cosenza in the Coppa Italia last week. They scored three goals during extra time after conceding a 90th-minute equalizer. However, on Sunday, they face tougher opposition in Atalanta.
