Tsitsipas was bidding for his third Monte-Carlo singles crown. He had slipped out of the Top 10 in the PIF ATP Rankings earlier this season, but was assured of a rise to World No. 9, and could move to No. 7 with the title.
Ruud, up four places to No. 6 this week in the PIF ATP Live Rankings, was seeking the biggest title of his career and his first since Estoril in 2023. He had a four-match losing streak in tour-level finals, including a defeat to Djokovic in last year’s Roland Garros title round.
Tsitsipas stopped the winning streak of reigning Miami champion Jannik Sinner in the semi-finals. In a match marked by intense rallies and powerful strokes, Tsitsipas rallied from a 2-4 deficit in the decisive set.
Ruud defeated World No. 1 Novak Djokovic for the first time, with both underdogs prevailing in three sets.
Tsitsipas dominated the finals against Ruud from the onset, cruising through six consecutive games to wrap up the opening set in 36 minutes.
The second set was a much closer affair but Tsitsipas proved too strong for Ruud.
Tsitsipas became the first player in the professional era to win his first three Monte Carlo finals in straight sets.
With a 6-1, 6-4 victory, Tsitsipas secured his third Monte Carlo Masters title in four years and his first title of 2024.
This match was a testament to both players’ skill and determination, and it certainly made the 2024 Monte Carlo Masters a tournament to remember.
