It was jubilation galore in the camp of Nigeria as Flamingoes shocked one of the tournament favourites the United States in the quarter-final of the U17 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
The Yankees girls dominated the game but it was the Nigeria side that netted the opening goal in the 27th minute from the penalty spot through Edafe Omamuzo after Amina Bello was fouled in the box.
The Americans bounced back in the 40th through Villareal after a deflection from Folorunsho and ended the first stanza in a 1-1 draw.
The second half was well-contested by both sides and the Americans almost scored the winning goal in the 85th minute but Miracle Usani did enough to clear the line for Nigeria.
The game moved straight into the penalty shoot and it was Flamingoes that prevailed 4-3 and picked the semi-ticket.
