The Bafana Bafana of South Africa went top of the Nigeria group on Saturday after their victory against the Cheetah of Benin Republic.
Playing at the Moses Mahbinda stadium, it was Al Ahly of Egypt striker Percy Tau who netted the opening goal in the second minute.
The host expectedly dominated the game and the Benin Republic team was pegged back for most of the game.
The South African side added to their goal tally on the stroke of halftime through Mudau after the away side failed to clear their lines.
Beniniose under coach Gernot Rohr showed tremendous improvement in the second half and they were able to reduce the scoreline to 2-1 in the 70th minute.
Despite the effort of the Cheetah to come back into the game, the host did enough to earn their full point.
The win catapulted South Africa to the top of the group with 3 points and Nigeria and Lesotho in joint while Benin remain at the bottom.
