Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton has been honored by the Brazilian lower house of Congress with a Brazilian citizenship F1 returns to Sao Paolo this weekend.
The seven-time world champion has always had fond memories of Brazil and he dedicated his national honor to the late Brazilian F1 champion Ayrton Senna whom he idolized when he was growing up as a child. Hamilton won his first driver’s championship in 2008 at the Brazilian GP making him the first Briton to win the title since Damon Hill in 1996 and he grew into legendary status in the sport.
Mercedes Team Principal, Toto Wolff in a statement said: “Today is a special moment for Lewis, who has just become an honorary citizen of Brazil. Being recognized and celebrated by the birthplace of Ayrton Senna illustrates the true dimension of his incredible achievements whether on the asphalt of Interlagos or as a defender and promoter of diversity in our sport. From each of us: Lewis, we are so proud of you. Thank you for everything we’ve accomplished together so far – we’re motivated and excited for what’s to come.”
With just 5 races left on the current calendar and 40 adrift of second-placed Ferrari on the Constructors Standings, Mercedes are hoping for a late revival in the current season which will see them finish second on the constructor’s table.
