With few hours to the announcement of the host countries for the 2025 and 2027 African Cup of Nations, the joint bid of Nigeria and the Benin Republic has decided to withdraw from bidding for 2025.
North African country Algeria was the first country to withdraw from staging the tournament, they tendered their withdrawal letter on Tuesday.
The news from the grapevine suggested that Algeria decided to step down to avoid humiliation from the rival country Morocco.
According to the update coming from Cairo, Egypt, the venue of the announcement, Nigeria and Benin have also withdrawn from bidding for the 2025 edition of the competition.
Instead, they have shifted their focus on getting the nod to host the 2027 edition but will still have to contend with Senegal who remained a top favourite.
