Nigeria’s Super Falcons defender Ashleigh Plumptre has revealed the reason she moved to the Saudi Arabia women’s league at the expense of a much-established league.
Despite having a strong performance at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, the skilful left-back decided to join Al-Ittihad of Saudi Arabia.
” My told me that club in Saudi Arabia contacted me, firstly I said why would I go when I’m enjoying myself in England.
We speak to them, management and the coach, we didn’t even speak about football for about an hour, we talked about myself, culture and values and I felt aligned with the people I was speaking to and I told my dad, that is where I want to be.
I signed before the World Cup because I wanted to focus on the competition and my dad asked if I had a better opportunity after the World Cup but I insisted on signing.
It happened unexpectedly but I know my football is at a place where I believe more in people”, she said.
Plumptre played a key role for Leicester City Women last season as they survived relegation on the final day of the season.
