George Russell won his first F1 race in his career and the process handed Mercedes their first race win in the penultimate race of the season at Interlagos.
The near-perfect weekend for Mercedes started when teammates George Russell and Lewis Hamilton secured a 1-2starting placement on the grid ahead of today’s main race. This was after both Russell and Hamilton had earlier secured a 1-3 finish in the sprint on Saturday.
The main race had a chaotic start when McClaren’s Daniel Riccardo had Kevin Magnussen had contact in the first lap and both drivers retired. Hamilton and Verstappen also had contact with both cars suffering various degrees of damage. With the champion having this handicap, Sergio Pérez of Redbull could not keep up with the pressure of George Russell. Lewis Hamilton was able to cross the line second and Carlos Sainz completed the podium.
Redbull teammates Max and Pérez both hinted at signs of bad blood when Verstappen did not let the Mexican overtake him. Pérez was heard saying over the radio: “It shows who he is”.
The final race weekend will take place at the Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi from the 18th – the 20th of November, 2022.
