Nottingham Forest boss Steve Cooper said he played Nigeria international Taiwo Awoniyi against Liverpool because he knew he would be a handful for Virgl Van Dijk.
The newly promoted side proved the bookmakers wrong on Saturday as they defeated Liverpool by a lone strike from Awoniyi.
He further commented on Awoniyi refusal to celebrate his goal against the former champions.
“T worked so hard. We played him today we thought he could be a handful for Virgil van Dijk. He proved to be that and deserved his goal.
‘If he didn’t celebrate, I’ll support whatever a player decides to do. Liverpool loads of the ball and territory, we had some good chances as well”, he said.
Forest’s famous win brought back memories of great European battles between the clubs with Brian Clough and Bob Paisley.
