A Jardon Sancho’s brilliant left foot goal and Cristiano Ronaldo’s first ever Europa League goal were all the Red Devils needed in Moldova to get their season back on track after losing 0-1 to Real Sociedad in their E opener.
Sancho, who was overlooked for the Three Lions’ call-up earlier in the day coolly converted Christian Eriksen’s reverse pass to give the visitors the lead in the 17th minute before Ronaldo converted from the spot to double United lead after Patrick Kpozo tripped Diogo Dalot in the box.
The Moldovan side could not create any clear cut chances against their superior opposition and Sancho could have added a second if not for Sheriff Tiraspol’s captain’s brilliant clearance off the line.
United climb to second on the table, though same points and goal difference with their hosts.
Next up for Erik ten Hag boys will be an away fixture in Greece against Omonia Nicosia on 6 October while Sheriff Tiraspol host Real Sociedad, the table toppers.
In the other Group E fixtures, Real Sociedad defeated Omonia Nicosia 2-1 to maintain 100% winning record in the league.
