After the record-breaking feats of Team Nigeria at the recently concluded Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games and World Athletics Championships, Nigerian President, General Muhammadu Buhari (Rtd) has approved the conferment of the Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON) award and cash gifts for the stellar performance shown during the events.
In a statement released by the Presidency, General Buhari was quoted to have expressed his delight when the Nigerian flag was hoisted twelve times during the Commonwealth games.
He hoped that the awards and reward will spur more athletes to put Nigeria on the world map.
The sports minister, Mr Sunday Dare urged the private sector to support the government’s investment in sports as sports is beyond recreational and now big business.
Part of recipients of the honours included the world champion in the 100m hurdles, Tobiloba Amusan, Ese Brume, Blessing Oborodudu , Oluwafemiayo Folashade, Taiwo Liadi, Ikechukwu Obichukwu, Bose Omolayo, Favour Ofili, Nasiru Sule, Ifechukwude Ikpeoyi, Ebikewenimo Welson, Hannah Rueben and Elizabeth Oshoba.
