The script of the 2010 World Cup quarterfinal match between Uruguay and Ghana was replayed today but with only slight modifications in today’s Group H fixture which most Ghanaian football fans called a “grudge match”.
Both Ghana and Uruguay started today’s game cautiously because they know that the other group game being played simultaneously between South Korea and Portugal would also determine if there would determine if there tournament journey would continue or end after 3 games played.
Ghana had a glorious chance to put themselves ahead in the 18th minute but the nightmare of former captain AsamoahGyan’s miss from 2010 struck once again when captain André Ayew saw his tame effort saved by the Uruguayan goalkeeper. They (Ghana) were punished for this miss when Giorgian de Arrascaeta scored a brace for the South Americans in 8 minutes to give them a healthy lead into halftime.
Meanwhile in the simultaneous fixture played, Portugal who took the lead early in their own fixture were pegged back by a Kim Young-gwon equalizer which meant Portugal and Uruguay would qualify out of the group. Uruguayan captain, Luis Suárez was inconsolable from the bench when he got wind of the other fixture which sealed their fate out of the World Cup.
The final twist to the saga arrived when Hwang Hee-chandisrupted the permutations and the final placement of the teams with his winning goal for the Koreans. His goal ensured that South Korea leapfrogged Uruguay into second place and Uruguay falling into third. Portugal finished the group and winner while Ghana sat at the foot of the table with 1 win and 2 losses.
