Spanish football star Jenni Hermoso stepped into the spotlight outside Madrid’s criminal court, wearing a poised smile but carrying the weight of a serious matter. Testifying against former Spanish football chief Luis Rubiales, she recounted the incident where he kissed her during the Women’s World Cup trophy ceremony, a gesture she vehemently claims was non-consensual.
Arriving at the Audiencia Nacional in a grey overcoat, Hermoso greeted the press with a smile but chose to withhold any statements before appearing in front of Judge Francisco de Jorge. Rubiales, embroiled in allegations of sexual assault and coercion, has persistently defended the kiss as “a consensual peck.” However, Hermoso’s stance has been resolute, leading her to file a lawsuit against Rubiales in September.
The gravity of the situation was evident as Rubiales, now subjected to a restraining order, faces allegations that could have serious legal repercussions under Spanish law. The incident, widely condemned and leading to Rubiales’ resignation from the RFEF football federation, triggered global outrage and his suspension by FIFA.
The legal proceedings have drawn attention to the severity of non-consensual actions, with Spanish law treating such acts as sexual assault, encompassing various forms of sexual violence and carrying penalties ranging from fines to imprisonment.
Rubiales faces additional accusations of coercion for allegedly pressuring Hermoso to justify his actions publicly, which were broadcast worldwide. The court’s inquiry involved questioning other individuals, including former women’s coach Jorge Vilda, men’s team director Albert Luque, and RFEF marketing chief Ruben Rivera, regarding their roles in the incident.
Numerous witnesses have come forth, shedding light on the pressure Hermoso endured, among them esteemed footballer Alexia Putellas, a two-time Ballon d’Or winner, and two other Spanish teammates. Their testimonies serve as a reminder of the importance of standing against misconduct and promoting a safe and respectful environment within the realm of sports.
