Mason Mount’s critics have never kept quiet about the performances of the young English midfielder, it is their national anthem. The criticism got louder when Mount failed to score or assist in his first 7 games of the current season for Chelsea football club
Well, while Mount is capable of disappearing in games, he has done more than he is given credit for and here is why.
Since he made his competitive debut in 2019 for Chelsea, Mount has grown in leaps and bounds. In the 2019/2020 season, he scored 8 goals and registered 6 assists, in the 2020/2021 season, he had 9 goals and 10 assists and he took his figures to another level by registering 13 goals and 16 assists last season.
In total, Mount has 32 goals and 36 assists in 174 appearances so far for Chelsea when you add the 2 goals and 2 assists he has registered this season
For you to appreciate this Cobham’s graduate, let’s do a comparison of his stats after 174 games to that of Frank Lampard.
Lampard had 32 goals and 19 assists for the club, which is 51 goal contributions, 17 lesser than Mason Mount, Mount is clear, isn’t it?
Mount might not go on to achieve as much as Lampard did for the blues but the above stat is evident that Mount should be given more credit for the start of his Chelsea career.
Now, here is the most important point.
Mason Mount is 23 years old, and has played as an attacking midfielder, central midfielder, left winger, left midfielder, and right winger under 3 different managers in 4 years at Chelsea, this is not good for the development of a young player.
When a young player plays under different managerswith different systems in 4 years, it is hazardous to his career. Yet, despite this obstacle, Mount’s career is on the rise and it is a testament to his quality.
Since making his debut in 2019, can you name 3 players that have been more consistent than Mount? I am sure you will struggle to come up with names.
It is no surprise that he has been voted as Chelsea’s player of the season in the past two seasons, an award Lampard won just 3 times in his Chelsea career.
I know Kylian Mbappe, Erling Haaland, and two young players like Mount, are setting the world on fire with their blistering performances but players should be allowed to develop at their own pace.
Mason Mount might not be world-class yet but here is a guy that has done very well for the club as of yet, capable of being one of the best in his position and helping Chelsea win more laurels in years to come.
Therefore, his critics should appreciate him for what he has done for Chelsea for more is yet to come from the young English midfielder.
What do you feel?
