It is only normal when a beautiful couple gives birth to an adorable child if they don’t, such a child must be a bastard.
Then how does this relate to Erling Haaland making light work of the English Premier League defence?
Let me explain.
With 15 goals in 9 games, Erling Braut Haaland is setting an unprecedented height and at this rate, he will make Mohammed Salah’s record of 32 goals in a season which is the highest ever in an English Premier League campaign an ordinary feat.
Apart from being a brilliant finisher, how has he been able to score this much at this stage?
You see the fact is that Manchester City has been the best-attacking team in the league for the past 5 years.
In the 2017/2018 season, the Citizens scored 106 goals, they bagged 95 goals in the 2018/2019 season, netted 102 goals in the 2019//2020 season, 83 goals in the 2020/2021 season, and they hit the back of the net 94 times last season.
In these 5 seasons, Pep Guardiola’s side has outscored every other team in the league and has had the highest expected goals(calculated based on chances created) except for last season when Liverpool had better-expected goals than the Premier League’s defending champions.
This they achieved without Erling Braut Haaland, the best finisher of the ball in the European topflight. It was only in the 2020/2021 season that Haaland’s name was marked present in the big chances missed in the Bundesliga throughout his stay at Borussia Dortmund.
The ease at which Manchester City creates chances makes it very easy for a deadly finisher like Haaland score a bunch of goals. No team in the Premier League scores as much or creates chances at ease as Manchester City.
Put Haaland in any other team not named Manchester City, and he won’t have scored this much and we won’t be having a conversation like this.
What we are seeing is a result of the marriage between the best attacking side in the league and the best finisher of the ball in Europe. It’s a mutually beneficial relationship with Manchester City scoring more goals and Haaland scoring more than ever before.
This is my two cents on why Haaland has been extravagant in front of goal. What do you think?
