Defending champions Real Madrid will take on Shakhtar Donetsk on Wednesday evening at the Santiago Bernabeu in a first versus the second encounter. Madrid is first in Group F with six points, closely followed by Shakhtar in second with four points.
Real Madrid is unbeaten in the Laliga and Champions League this season. They will want to continue their impressive form against Shakhtar despite drawing their last game in the league against ten-man Osasuna on Sunday.
Shakhtar Donetsk is also unbeaten in the Ukrainian Premier League and Champions League this season and is coming from the back of winning 6-1 away from home in their last game.
This is the third consecutive season to see Real Madrid and Shakhtar Donetsk meet in the UEFA Champions League group stage. It’s only the fifth fixture to be played in three consecutive seasons in the group stage and the first since Man City vs Shakhtar between 2017-18 and 2019-20. Real Madrid last faced a team in the group stage in three seasons in a row between 2010-11 and 2012-13 vs Ajax.
Shakhtar Donetsk won away at Real Madrid in the 2020-21 UEFA Champions League group stage, with the game played at the Alfredo Di Stéfano stadium.
