While Napoli and Arsenal have blown everyone away with their title challenges, neither of them has been the best side in the top 5 leagues in Europe. This is not an agenda and that is why you have to hear me out.
The number one metric to determine the best team among the top 5 leagues in Europe is the number of points won.
No club in the big league has won as much as Saint-German. PSG have won 38 points which is 6 points more than their nearest rival, Napoli. Real Madrid, Barcelona, and Arsenal are the other teams in the top 5 for most points so far.
Since PSG like other Ligue 1 clubs have played more matches than the rest, it is best to use point per game to determine the most points won so far. Point per game is calculated by dividing total number points by number of games.
It will also interest you to know that PSG is superior to any other team. Christophe Galtier’s side has a point per game of 2.71 which is the highest in the top 5 leagues presently.
Offensively, PSG hasn’t been the best side with Bayern Munich and Manchester City outscoring every other team in Europe. PSG have scored 38 goals this season, 2 lesser than Man City’s 40 and 3 lesser than Bayern’s 41.
That doesn’t tell the whole story though, because their expected goals of 33 is the best in Europe and their non-penalty expected goal of 30 is the second-best in Europe, behind FC Barcelona.
What this means is that both Manchester City and Bayern Munich have benefited from incredible finishes and it is no wonder that both are 26th and 12th for expected goals from shots taken.
The reason why I am making this point is that it is unsustainable for a team to outscore its expected goals by a wide margin and to point out the fact that PSG has been as good as Manchester City and Bayern Munchen in front of goal.
Defensively, the Parc Des Princes Landlord hasn’t been the best. They have conceded 9 goals this season which is still good enough to get them a place among the top 10 teams with the least goals conceded.
However, PSG with Gianluigi Donarumma in goal has kept 8 clean sheets this season, which is the joint second-best this season with Barcelona being the only team with more clean sheets. What this means is that they can defend themselves when they want to.
It will also interest you to know that PSG’s 90% pass completion is the best in Europe, they rank 2nd for the total distribution of passes and progressive distribution of passes.
While you might point out the fact that the difference between PSG and other teams in Ligue 1 is as much as the distance between heaven and earth, you can only beat what is in front of you. And we shouldn’t forget that PSG lost their crown to Lille two seasons ago, therefore, they deserve to be applauded.
With a few points of mine, I hope I have been able to convince you that PSG has been the best in the top 5 leagues in Europe this season😏.
